ENVIRONMENT

Bhutanese have deep traditional reverence for nature and the kingdom is one of the leading countries in environmental conservation. Over 70% of Bhutan’s land area is still under forest cover. Bhutan’s commitment to environmental conservation is best exemplified by constitutional mandate to maintain 60% forest cover for all times to come. Many parts of the country have been declared wildlife reserves, and are the natural habitats of rare species of both flora and fauna.

Bhutanese society has lived in harmony with nature since time immemorial. Such harmonious relationship between people and nature was deeply influenced by Buddhist values and thinking. The concept of interdependence between communities and the environment they live in further helped in the preservation of our environment.
